Sante Kimes 1934-2014

Sante Kimes has died. She inspired this blog. She was a grifter who sometimes impersonated Elizabeth Taylor. She murdered a few people. She burst into the headlines in 2000 when she attempted to assume the identity of Irene Silverman and appropriate her $7.7 million Manhattan townhouse. Sante and her son were convicted of murdering Silverman. My sister  --
from whom I am estranged -- also cultivated a resemblance to Taylor. I don't think my sister or my brother-in-law have murdered anyone but I am estranged from them both for good reason. Sante Kimes involved her sons, especially her youngest, in her scams. Sante died in prison, in Bedford Hills. Her son Kenny Kimes is in prison still.

Sante Kimes had two sons. Kenneth Kimes was her partner in crime but his elder half-brother, Kent Walker, remained mostly honest and wrote the memoir Son of a Grifter. The word “grift” stems from “graft.” Jim Thompson’s The Grifters (1963) tells, perhaps coincidentally, the tale of a grifting mother and son. Angelica Huston in the 1990 hit movie version plays the mother and John Cusack plays the son. Confidence artists like actors play roles but deceive their audience actually and criminally. Too much of the world’s a stage for con artists.

Con artists are the most dangerous.
